The Far Side of Green-Wood: Historic Trolley Tours

Experience the most magnificent and historic 478 acres in New York City. Visitors will hear fascinating stories of Green-Wood’s permanent residents, see breathtaking views of Manhattan, tread where George Washington and his troops fought the Battle of Brooklyn and much more. Now, by popular demand, a rotation of three different tours is offered. Each boasts great views, beautiful monuments, rolling hills, century-old tress and stories of the fascinating persons interred at Green-Wood.

Visitors will see the graves of FAO Schwartz; Charles Ebbets; Frank Morgan (The “Wizard of Oz”); organized crime figure, Johnny Torrio (Al Capone’s guru); Charles Feltman, inventor of the hot dog; and Henry Chadwick, “The Father of Baseball.” The tour will take the perimeter roads to the very back of the cemetery where visitors will see many unique sculptures and mausoleums. The tour will also include stories of the “lady in the bathtub” and the myth of the Mafia Bride who was shot on her wedding day. Additionally, visitors will see Green-Wood’s solemn monument to the victims of the two airliners that collided over the skies of Brooklyn in 1960; and more.

All tours include a visit to the Historic Chapel and to Battle Hill. These tours last approximately two hours. The trolley is heated/air-conditioned and enclosed. The tour includes several stops where visitors have the option to walk outside.

Brooklyn’s longest-running outdoor film and music series is back for a 10th consecutive year in Williamsburg’s iconic McCarren Park, at the corner of North 12 St. and Bedford Ave. SummerScreen takes place every Wednesday in July and August, and, as usual, features food trucks, beer, live music, and, at dusk, a showing of carefully chosen films that are sure to please. This 10th anniversary season includes a veritable Greatest Hits of SummerScreen, with a lineup featuring the most popular movies in the history of the series. Doors open at 6 pm and the film begins at sundown.

I found these guys on yelp about a year ago, and boy did they ever deliver.

My wife and I were looking for agents to list our co-op in Kensington, and we happened upon Arny Cohen. He and Robert Bryan came by to check out the place and immediately struck us as honest, hardworking guys with lots of personality. Our cat also approved, so we decided to give them the listing.

We got an above asking, all cash offer about two weeks in and were ready to close. Robert, being the scrupulous and well informed gentleman that he is, caught that we hadn't owned it long enough to avoid paying capital gains tax, so dissuaded us from the deal, instead encouraging us to wait. In this type of market it is VERY rare to have anyone remotely involved in your deal not pushing you to close as quick as you can - I'm sure it was difficult for Robert and Arny to walk away from a sure thing, but they did have our best interests at heart.

We relisted with them with the intention of buying another place. They quickly got another (much higher) all cash offer that unfortunately didn't pan out, but that didn't stop them from tirelessly showing us open houses in the far corners of Brooklyn every single weekend of the past cold winter. Sure enough, another offer came in that they negotiated up close to asking from a lowball initial offer and we got into contract. We closed yesterday. Thank you, Robert Bryan and Arny Cohen for working so hard for us and having a good time while doing it, too. We really appreciate it!

Founded in Tel Aviv by Lee Sher and Saar Harari in 2000 and now based in NYC, LEESAAR is “a gutsy, brainy modern-dance troupe” (NY Times) with a highly theatrical approach. Props, costumes, and pantomime punctuate their Gaga-inspired movement to form a delightful brand of avant-garde. In recent program notes, Sher and Hariri wrote, “by seeking the extreme within ourselves we hope to expand our limits for a fresh experience.”
In their new piece Grass and Jackals, they find these extremes in an imagined state of nature. Set against a kaleidoscopic moiré backdrop, the work “transforms the dancers—seven women, clad in gleaming black bodysuits—into exotic, fluidly moving creatures, sexual and fierce.” (New Yorker)

BRIC presents the 37th annual Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival, comprised of 29 performances, June 3 – August 12. The programming, reflective of Brooklyn’s eclecticism and diversity, features a wide array of free, world-class performances in the singular environs of the Prospect Park Band Shell.

This group exhibition presents five weeks of interactive installations and performances. The exhibition rejects the notion that our culture rapidly and inevitably takes us further and further away from real interactions with each other and our environment. The curator Jasmine Murrell has chosen interactive work that directly engages the viewer, both visually and through sound and touch. It invites conversations between strangers; initiating activities in the space enjoyed and shared.

Mamady Kouyate is a pioneer of the Guinean musical movement known as Authenticité. He played in various bands - his own band, Les Ambassadeurs du Mandingue, being one of them - but is probably best known as the guitarist in the classic Bembeya Jazz National. Kouyate, who now lives in NY, has reformed the Mandingo Ambassadors, updating the sound of his youth, but keeping it very close to the standard of Authenticité. The new All-Star band includes Mamady "Djelike" Kouyate, guitar, leader; Bebe Camara, vocal; Eudy Fernandez, trumpet; Oran Etkin, tenor sax, clarinet; Sylvain Leroux, flute, Fula flute, alto sax; Sam Dickey, guitar; Nick Cudahy, bass; Andy Algire, drums; Foluso Mimy, percussion.
