Sir Nicholas Grimshaw and Mahadev Raman were key players in the design and construction of downtown’s new Fulton Center, which, in its artistry and functionality, rivals the great transportation buildings of the past. In this lively discussion you’ll hear about the challenges, solutions, and finesse needed to build New York’s newest world class transportation center, and restore the 19th century Corbin building that adjoins it.

Park Slope Halloween Parade
Friday, October 31, 2014, 6:30 p.m.
FREE

Starting point is 14th St. and Seventh Ave., Park Slope
Marchers line up on 14th St. between Seventh and Eighth Aves. starting at 5:30

Perhaps the largest children’s Halloween march in the nation, the Park Slope Civic Council’s Halloween Parade has been a part of neighborhood life since 1986. Each year, in a tremendous show of generosity, the merchants on Seventh and Fifth Avenues hand out an abundance of sweets and treats to a seemingly never-ending swarm of imaginatively attired children, eagerly holding up their bags. The sidewalks are an obstacle course of visual delights. Royalty and robots, animals and anime, svengalis and superheroes — all strolling the streets of the Slope in the late afternoon and into the evening.

Parade route is along Seventh Avenue, and concludes at the Old Stone House & Washington Park in JJ Byrne Playground (Third St. and Fifth Avenue) with a community gathering and dancing with the parade bands, ending at 9 pm.

Six Characters in Search on an Author
 by Luigi Pirandello

Théâtre de la Ville, Paris
Translation and adaptation by François Regnault
Directed by Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota
October 29, - November 2, 2014 $20-$85

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
2014 Next Wave Festival
BAM Harvey Theatre, 321 Ashland Place, Ft. Greene
A dysfunctional family of six interrupts the rehearsal of a play to make a curious claim: They are characters who’ve been abandoned by their author and are seeking a theater troupe to give them an artful sense of completion.
Developed by Swiss choreographer Gilles Jobin and German visual artist Julius von Bismarck while in residence at CERN, the world’s largest particle physics lab[1], QUANTUM takes the quark as muse, fusing choreography and installation art into an ode to subatomic randomness. Six dancers vibrate, scatter, and whirl beneath a gyrating quartet of industrial lamps, programmed to respond to the slightest movement, while Carla Scaletti’s soundscape, derived from particle collision data, provides the sonic ether.

Mamady Kouyate is a pioneer of the Guinean musical movement known as Authenticité. He played in various bands - his own band, Les Ambassadeurs du Mandingue, being one of them - but is probably best known as the guitarist in the classic Bembeya Jazz National. Kouyate, who now lives in NY, has reformed the Mandingo Ambassadors, updating the sound of his youth, but keeping it very close to the standard of Authenticité. The new All-Star band includes Mamady "Djelike" Kouyate, guitar, leader; Bebe Camara, vocal; Eudy Fernandez, trumpet; Oran Etkin, tenor sax, clarinet; Sylvain Leroux, flute, Fula flute, alto sax; Sam Dickey, guitar; Nick Cudahy, bass; Andy Algire, drums; Foluso Mimy, percussion.
